Keep Your Smile Strong with Fluoride Treatments

Posted on 6/10/2016 by Robert Leale
A man suffering from tooth decay.Fluoride is one of the best ways that you can prevent tooth decay, and for this reason, most municipalities have added fluoride to their public water supplies.

If you want to keep your smile strong, it is important to make sure that you are getting enough fluoride, and pursuing a fluoride treatment at your dentist's office may be in your best interest.

Dental Fluoride Treatments

Many dentists recommend that both adults and children have fluoride treatments applied every six months at their dental cleanings.

Your dental hygienist will apply the fluoride to your teeth in the form of a varnish, foam, or gel, and these treatments have considerably higher levels of fluoride than that found in mouth rinses and toothpaste.

Varnishes are the most commonly used option, and after it is painted onto your teeth, you'll be able to drink or eat immediately after.

Many adults are under the impression that fluoride treatments are just for kids. While it is true that these treatments are highly important in children ages 6 months to 16 years, as the teeth are still developing during these years, adults also benefit from fluoride. Research has shown that even in adulthood, fluoride is important in fighting decay and strengthening the teeth.

Risk of Fluoride Loss

Certain conditions may put adults at risk for fluoride loss, meaning that they should definitely consider fluoride treatments. If you suffer from dry mouth as a result of the medications that you take or an underlying medical condition, fluoride treatments may be in your best interest.

Additionally, people living with gum disease, gum recession, and a history of frequent cavities can also benefit from the tooth-strengthening benefits that fluoride treatments have to offer.
