Crown Lengthening Spokane, WA

a smiling patient at Northview Family DentalCrown lengthening is a quick surgical, dental procedure that we perform to increase the health of your teeth and gums. This procedure is the removal of excess gum tissue that may be hanging over and around a tooth. Through a series of simple cuts, Dr. Leale can expose more of the tooth, lengthening the amount of visible tooth. By removing overhanging tissue, we can reduce the incidence of decay, help fight gum disease, and present more of the tooth for prosthetic fitting.

Crown lengthening is performed when the patient has excessive gum tissue that extends over the tooth, or when Dr. Leale needs to gain access to a portion of the tooth that is covered. Working with our staff at Northview Family Dental, we can evaluate your dental needs and make recommendations on the best course of action for your oral health, which may include crown lengthening.

Dr. Leale may recommend this simple, in office, a procedure based on two main reasons:
•  Overhanging Gum Tissue: Sometimes termed as a gummy smile a patient who has low hanging gum tissue has a potential problem. A patient may not like the aesthetic of their gummy smile, but Dr. Leale would also tell you of the potential oral health problems that come with it. This excessive gum tissue provides room for bacteria to hide. Food can get stuck, plaque can collect, and bacteria can happily remain and grow without much disturbance. Removing particles from under and around this overhanging tissue can be difficult if not impossible to remove. Allowing bacteria to stay in place will result in decay, and gum disease.
•  Uncover More of the Tooth Structure: There may need to gain access to more of the patients tooth structure. Dr. Leale may find that more of the tooth is needed to attach a prosthetic to, such as a crown, bridge or partial denture. Alternatively, the patient may have decay or a fracture of the portion of the tooth that we can not see. Crown lengthening can help us gain that access.

The Crown Lengthening Procedure

Before we perform this minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Leale will discuss your needs to help you feel comfortable. This is done through the assistance of a local anesthetic, though we can offer conscious sedation when needed or when multiple dental procedures are being performed at once. Once the patient is comfortable, Dr. Leale will then perform a series of cuts. Dr. Leale will do this very consciously considering the transition from one area of tissue to another area of tissue, making a gradual, natural appearance. Once complete, Dr. Leale will use sutures to close any open tissue and then complete with an antibacterial wash, this will help to help prevent infection.

The entire procedure of crown lengthening is done in less than an hour. We will provide information and care instructions, including signs to look for that indicate problems. If you experience any unusual or heavy bleeding or signs that indicate infection, we ask that you seek immediate medical attention at your closest convenience and then contact our office to schedule an appointment.
