If you have lost one or more teeth, whether from trauma to your teeth, gum disease, cavities, or due to another cause, you have a few different options available to you.
On one end of the spectrum is having Dental Implants installed to mimic your real teeth in appearance and function. On the other end of the spectrum is using dentures. However, many people who would like to afford the expense of dental implants and yet would like something that looks and feels more real than dentures opt for a dental bridge.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a dental restorative construct that “bridges” the gap between your real teeth. A Dental Bridge can be anchored to real teeth on either end of the gap—or, if you have lost all the teeth in an area, it can be anchored to a dental implant on either end.

In either case, the bridge is attached to the anchor points and, in the middle, one or more false teeth are attached between the two anchor points. They can be constructed from a variety of materials; however, the most common materials are porcelain teeth fused to a metal bridge.

What are the advantages of a bridge?

A dental bridge can provide you with the look and function of real teeth without the expense of multiple Dental Implants.Dental Bridges are permanently affixed in your mouth, meaning you don’t need to worry about removing them each night. They are durable and, with the proper care, should last you for years and years.

How long does the process take?

It usually requires at least two visits to get a bridge. During your first visit, we will take an impression of your teeth and prepare the two teeth on the ends (the anchor teeth) to receive the crowns that will hold the bridge in place. We’ll give you a temporary bridge to wear until your permanent one is ready.

We will prepare your bridge in a dental laboratory and, when you return, we will attach it to the anchor teeth. At that point we will adjust it to make sure it fits properly and mimics your natural teeth in appearance and function.

What is involved in caring for a dental bridge?

You won’t have to do anything special to care for your bridge. Just brush and floss as usual, and continue to come in for regular cleanings and checkups. With the proper care, you’ll forget that the bridge isn’t even made up of your natural teeth.
